How to create golf ball backspin
If playing towards a green with a tight flag behind a bunker or close to the front of a green you may need to use golf ball backspin.
The Lie:
The ball needs to be on a good neat lie so the club can make a clean contact.
Things like grass, especially when wet can greatly hinder the amount of golf ball backspin.
Practice backspin about 40 - 60 yards from a hole. The club face must strike the back of the ball before it makes
contact with the ground or sand.
The Golf Ball:
Play with a soft covered ball. This allows the cover to penetrate into the grooves of the club face putting more spin on the ball.
Wind & Green Direction.
Backspin is more effective with a headwind. It helps if the green is soft also!
Club Choice:
The more lofted the club the more it can spin the ball. Use a sand wedge or pitching wedge for maximum backspin. Clean those clubs also for maximum contact with the grooves
Set Up.
Place your club behind the ball and open the club face slightly. Open your stance aiming your body to the left of the target with 70% of your weight onto your left foot. Ideal ball position is in the center of your stance. This with the weight on the front foot steepens the swing, but the open club face allows counteracts this slightly by allowing the club face to bounce on the ground and then slide under the ball.
You only need slight wrist action at the top of the backswing. As you swing down rotate your body through as your hands keep the club face open increasing the time of impact and creating good backspin.
