An interesting fact. A golf ball without dimples would probably travel no more than 130 yards in the air. Where one with can travel up to 280-290 yards.
Without dimples a golf balls performance would be seriously depriciated.
Dimples provide lift to get and keep a golf ball in the air. There are now a huge variety of dimple patterns found on golf balls providing different trajectories. Golf balls with deeper dimples will tend to have a lower ball flight. The deep dimples create drag preventing lift whereas the shallow dimples create lift. ( Note dimples do not effect spin ) With careful consideration, dimple design alongside ball construction a manufacturer can optimise a ball for trajectory and spin control
